Outdoor Classrooms
The outdoor environment can offer rich learning experiences not found indoors and an outdoor classroom is ideal for an evolving curriculum, providing sensory experiences leading to greater levels of creativity and understanding.
The playground is full of wonderful things for children to experiment, discover, and explore. At Hand Made Places we have pioneered the use of the outdoor classroom, providing opportunities for quiet as well as active play while children are outside, utilising natural canopies of bamboo, clematis and passion-flower climbers to provide a vibrancy of colour and aroma with the added benefit of protecting children from sun-exposure.
From simple story circles to longboats, barges and ‘virtual ponds’ we have created a range of inventive designs, which promote active learning through play and hands-on exploration.

Kingfisher Virtual Pond

Contained through a clever use of poles and planters this virtual pond classroom is entered by walking over a decked platform, complete with bench seats, frog and dragonfly >play sculptures; shade is created through netting and climbing sensory plants. The surfacing is a blue outdoor carpet, suitable for all year use, complete with green lily pad!

Cannon Lane Virtual Pond
