Case Study: Beaulieu National Motor Museum – Bespoke Play Bus

Beaulieu National Motor Museum – Bespoke Play Bus

Hand Made Places were successful in gaining the contract to produce a bespoke play unit for the Beaulieu National Motor Museum.  This world renowned museum is home to many historical vehicles including both Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, and the Flying Ford Anglia from the Harry Potter films. Therefore our play unit had to be something special, and had to embody everything that the museum stood for whilst still being fun for children of all ages.

The client requested that the play unit be an exact replica of their open top tour bus. A tour bus which is used regularly in order to transport customers around this iconic museum. Sticking to this interesting brief Hand Made Places designed a completely bespoke product which was complete with two tiers, a fully functioning cab with moving steering wheel, seating for ‘passengers’ and even a number plate. The play bus also incorporated all of the distinctive markings and engravings which can be found on the original bus. The client also requested that our bespoke design incorporated an already existing slide which they were keen to re-use. This was strategically placed on the top deck in order to ensure that it did not divert attention from the realistic design of the bus, yet optimised fun for all.

The museum asked for a natural looking play bus which would in keep with the beautiful natural surroundings, and therefore the timber play equipment at Hand Made Places fitted the brief perfectly. The bus was installed on top of artificial grass which added to the natural aesthetic whilst still providing suitable impact absorbency.
