Case Study: Downderry Primary School – Outdoor Learning Area

Downderry Primary School – Outdoor Learning Area

The school initially contacted Hand Made Places as they wanted to enhance their KS1 and Reception playgrounds. The existing area had nothing to offer other than a plain tarmac area.

They wanted us to provide an area, which provided plenty of opportunities for physical activities, imaginative play, and even a performance area for pupils.

We used green and blue wet pour surfacing to create an impression of land and sea for the children and added in various items of playground equipment.

We provided various trail equipment to offer physical challenges including a traverse wall and balance beams.

We also added play sculptures to the blue wet pour surfacing to give the illusion of creatures travelling through the sea offering plenty of opportunity for imaginative play.

A star stage area was created to give the children a place to showcase their talents and a place to shine in front of their peers.

This outdoor learning & play area is now a vibrant, imaginative place to play and learn and is well utilised by all.
