Case Study: St. Catherine’s School – Outdoor Area

St. Catherine’s School – Outdoor Area

St. Catherine’s Primary School in Didsbury, Manchester required outdoor play equipment and a shelter for outdoor area.

A storytelling area was created by combining the storytelling chair with benches, to be used both at playtime and for outdoor learning.

A variety of playground equipment was selected to enhance the play and learning value of the outdoor area. The playground equipment selected will encourage active play, developing balancing and co-ordination skills as well as building physical development, communication and social skills.

The Littlegarth activity centre presents a variety of challenges, and includes ramps, a traverse wall, scramble nets and a rope bridge. A balance beam, stepping stones and duck & weave complement the Littlegarth activity centre to create a mini trim trail.

The new playground at St. Catherine’s also includes musical section with chimes, conga drums and a star stage for pupils to create their own performances, which helps to develop confidence and self-esteem.

Mud kitchens provide an opportunity for children to get messy and be creative, encouraging imaginative play. A bespoke timber Grace Shelter created a covered area on the playground, so that pupils can enjoy being outdoors all year round, despite the weather.

Small timber planters and wet pour surfacing complete the outdoor play area at St. Catherine’s School, making it a welcoming area for pupils to play and learn.
