St Francis C of E School, Falmouth – Pirate Ship Play Equipment

At Hand Made Places we adore it when we know that all of the care and attention our designers and craftsmen have put into a project provides an emotional connection to it owners. This is precisely one of those occasions.

St Francis C of E Primary School in Falmouth approached Hand Made Places to help them with their plight to provide an iconic piece of play equipment in memory of Chloe, an 8-year-old pupil who had lost her battle with cancer 18 months previously.

Teacher, Nicky Sutton coordinated a fund raising team of both children and adults who were all determined to keep Chloe’s memory alive. Various brainstorming sessions took place to think of the perfect piece for the school, and they decided upon a pirate ship to provide fun and excitement for the pupils. They named the campaign ‘Pirate Ship for a Princess’ and it only took the team 12 months to raise an astounding £20,000.

We worked with the school to get the design exactly right to how they wanted it, we wanted to make sure we did Chloe’s memorial piece justice. This ship symbolised a sense of family and community, and before long ‘The Good Ship Chloe’ was launched.
