Sunday 24th April 2016, marked the official launch of the Colin Bloomfield sun shade at Alvaston Park in Derby.

The opening of this wonderful shelter was marked by a special event, held in honour of Radio Derby DJ Colin Bloomfield. The event welcomed people from the local community, as well as guest speakers, family and friends, and the turn out was phenomenal.

Colin’s Mum, Alison Bloomfield proudly opened the sun shelter, in honour of her late son.

Colin’s Legacy…

Colin Bloomfield,  a highly respected Radio Derby DJ, sadly lost his battle to skin cancer in 2015, and as a result wanted to use his time to educate people about the importance of sun safety.

The installed  sun shade was paid for by the Colin Bloomfield Melanoma Appeal which received many donations, from those wanting to help Colin’s legacy live on, and that’s exactly what it does.

Alvaston Park is used by many families all year round, but especially during the summer months. Families enjoy picnic’s and play in this wide open green space.

Therefore, the installed sun shelter, which was designed and manufactured by Hand Made Places, provides a safe and sheltered area for children and families to enjoy whilst being protected from harmful UV rays.

On top of this brand new shelter, The Colin Bloomfield appeal has also helped to educate children about being safe in the sun as well providing screen sessions to identify those in danger of developing melanoma.

Why not help celebrate Colin Bloomfield’s legacy and register your school for Sun Safe Schools? Sun Safe Schools is a national accreditation developed by Skcin to educate children on the importance of sun safety.
