A new residential development – built above a live railway line – includes a playground and public plaza for the community to enjoy.
The pioneering scheme was drawn up to deliver high quality housing around a key transport hub in line with Government objectives.
Built above the railway line at Twickenham, it includes a new train station, passenger facilities, public realm and 121 new homes.
By transforming the land above the railway line, pressure on the greenbelt has been reduced and investment in rail infrastructure unlocked.
The project, led by Solum,  partnership between Network Rail and Kier Property, was logistically challenging with the safe operation of the railway a key consideration. Minimal impact on the rail environment was essential.
Working with contractor Geoffrey Osborne Limited, Hand Made Places and parent company Broxap designed, manufactured and installed a range of play equipment, cycle parking and seating to complement the mixed-use development.
Making best use of the transport links was essential in the residential development, with a range of Two-Tier Cycle Racks in various configurations manufactured for the scheme.
This includes Two-Tier racks with retractable gas-strut mechanism upper level troughs and Sheffield Cycle Racks as well as Sheffield Cycle Stands in the lower level.
An Activity Wall, featuring  Finger Mazes, Mirrors and Dizzy Disc, forms part of an inclusive play area for children of all abilities.
Outdoor Musical Instruments have also been installed including a Rain Wheel and Percussion Post.
Active play as well as sensory play is encouraged with the addition of a Trim Trail made up of a Scissor Bridge, Duck N Weave, Stepping Stones and Parallel Bars.
The play area was finished with wet pour safety surfacing while bespoke seating has been made available for parents and carers.
The timber seating includes a mix of galvanised steel armrests and FSC Iroko backrests, to match the seat and bench slats, ensuring it is accessible to all.
The comfortable, modern seating continues in the public plaza where the seats have been finished with granite ends.
A total of five bespoke seats complete the project.
